Hopes, Dreams, and Fears

As May gets inches closer, I feel that I will be asked at an increased frequency, "What are you going to do with the rest of your life?". I however, do not have an answer. As sad as it sounds for someone about to graduate with a Master's degree, I have no idea what one occupation I want to toil away at for the rest of my working days. Therfore, I hope that I am able to find a dream job and discover what it is I should do. I fear however that I may not.

After completing my undergraduate degree in buisness, I decided to pursue a MBA to broaden my job oppurtunities. However, my first Finance class changed my mind. As a graduate assistant in the Office of Alumni Relations, I discovered the interesting world of Communication and changed my degree program. This decision, I do not regret; it's wonderful to actually be interested in what you are learning.
Although I have no idea what occupation I want to toil away at, I do have several goals for myself and my professional career. I want to use my COM degree in some aspect in the corporate world, because it would be terrible to waste my education. I also do not want to be a slave to my job, i.e. I don't want to hate my life. I want to enjoy what I am doing everyday in some aspect. Further, I do not expect to land my dream job out of the gate in our dismal economy (especially because I have no idea what I want to do). But, my hope is that my master's degree will enable me to find and get my dream job within 5 years. If not, look for me on some island in the Carribean.

Hmm – first of all I think it’s pretty funny that we’re both ex-MBA student who switched to COM (It was the quantitative business analysis that got to me =). Also – don’t worry too much about wasting your education if not applied directly to a job; I may be speaking somewhat abstract – but sometimes simply the fact that you have the education is a great asset. As far as finding the perfect job – just follow what you love to do. And if that doesn’t help, just remember what Gary Vaynerchuk (from the Web 2.0 video of last week) said: those who do what they love always find a way to monetize the heck out of it! Either way – rock on – and cheers to the perfect job!
